🧩 MME #010: How I Went from Mid Level to Principal Engineer in 3 Years
Fast track your career growth
Making more money while working 9-5 is not simple - but it’s doable. Here are some resources to help you with it:
First - find a remote job to free up your time - here's how
Then - negotiate a higher salary - here's how
And then make your first $1000 freelancing - investing time and money into it to expedite the process - here's how
Now, let’s dive in…
1. Want to get promoted? Don’t just focus on your coding skills
- After a certain level your communication skills mater more than your coding skills
- Show you manager you are capable of taking initiatives and drive results
- Collaborate more with your peer - more importantly, mentor them
- Find the most ambiguous project - then ask your manager to let you lead it
If you want a promotion - prove you’re already an asset at that next level.
2. Don’t want to get promoted? Here’s what you can do… 🤣
Procrastinate your tasks as much as possible
Take as many coffee breaks as you can
Nap when manager's around
Put in as less hours as you can
Start new gossips every week
You turn… what would you add to this?
3. Wow! An action packed book on getting promoted quickly
If you are going from mid-level to higher up, I'd focus more on skills other than coding
Planning for the team and helping your manager
Unblocking your peers and mentoring them
Leaving non-trivial feedback on design docs and pull requests
4. The sooner you get promoted… the faster you can complete your bucket list
This is exactly how I think about career growth 📈:
The more efforts I put in
The more value I add to the company
The sooner it gets me promoted
The better life I can give to my family
The faster my dreams come true
Put it in action...
Want to improve communication skills
Actively take out 15 mins every day and do
a presentation
or a role play
or practice negotiation
Want to improve your leadership skills
Choose a junior
Identify their shortcomings
Talk to your manager and offer that peer help to improve those areas
Want to have more impact on your team?
Find a few ambiguous project
Dive deep into the problem and come up with some solutions
Discuss with your manager about the possibility to lead that project
Cheers,
🧘♂️
